Hooking up a normal controller to an iQue

Mon Dec 15, 2014 3:32 pm

I am active in the speedrunning community from time to time. Some people do their Ocarina of Time runs on iQue, because it is essentially a no/less lag version of the N64 one, with super fast text. Unfortunately the controller kind of sucks and the analog stick can be awkward as well (holding straight up/down/left/right is a lot harder than with an N64 controller).

It would be awesome if we could hook up a normal controller (GC or N64) to it. Now my question is: what is the easiest way to do this. I know that on N64 the controller talks with the system via a bi-directional serial wire. Do the buttons on the iQue also get converted to a one wire signal before going to the big ASIC? Or does every button signal go separately to the ASIC.

If the last thing is the case, it seems every button needs to be wired separately and then hooked up to a microcontroller that simulates the button presses and also simulates the joy stick input. I am hoping there is a more elegant solution than just rewiring every button, but unfortunately it seems this is the only way, because I am afraid every button goes separately to the ASIC.

Marshallh, hopefully you read this post. I know you examined the iQue PCB, so maybe you have any suggestions how to best perform the mod. Thanks!

If you look at this picture you will see that it should be very easy to replace the thumbstick with an original N64 controller's thumbstick since the iQue uses the same 6pin connector:

And the rubber dome buttons you could replace with high quality tact switches like they do in portable N64 mods.

Not as good as connecting a real N64 controller but it could be a start.

That is my iQue, I made that picture. So yeah, I am aware that it is possible to install a normal N64 analog stick. It doesn't fit perfectly, but good enough. It makes the controls a lot better.

Allthough it would be possible to live with the iQue after swapping the analog stick it would still be nice to be able to hook up a preferred controller to it. The only question now is, are we gonna have to rewire all the buttons or is there a better way.
