Re: N64 HDMI converter thread

I sent my N64 to BadAss Consoles about two weeks ago, and I am CRAZY pumped about it. Had anyone here has their UltraHDMI mod done through him?

Thanks for the tip with Paper Mario.

It seems that the sample rate is 32khz, of course it varies between ~31800-~31900 causing my elastic buffer to go into hysteresis. I could hear it once I put on headphones and cranked it up. It seems to affect the string samples.
Levels are fine (they are kept 1:1 input to input). It's pretty much gone/unnoticeable everywhere else.

Good news, it can be addressed with a firmware update. Making an audio resampler is pretty difficult, but it gets way worse when the input sample rate isn't rational and changes all the time. I'm trying some things to see how to approach the problem differently.

I never noticed any crackling until someone mentioned it. I can hear it when I play my ocarina on MM.

Hi Marshallh, I just had a general question for you. How difficult would it be to implement pixel shading and other various graphics filters into your board to smooth out some of the rough pixels generating from activating deblur? I know some emulators implement this with HQ2X and other various filters such as 2xSai, Super Eagle, Super 2xSai and scaleX. Wasn't really sure if this can be implemented in your hardware or not but it would be a nice feature to have in a future software revision for the ultra hdmi. By the way I just got it sent to me from badass consoles and I am loving it so far especially knowing what potential your creation has. Thank you!

Well, the trouble with the algos is they are designed for limited color palettes where pixels have high contrasts with each other. If you try running these filters on some N64 3D graphics, the results are.. interesting. Bright, loud games don't look bad, but dark games look even more muddy and even worse the pixels appear to "swim" because you have subpixel movement in triangles. It's also hard to keep 2d HUD/sprite overlays looking clean, they are the hardest hit.

I am playing around with this a bit but haven't seen much promise.

On the other hand I've spent the past few days rewriting the audio resampler. Got things sounding great but I'm trying to take it farther with either Gaussian or cubic spline resampling.

What hardware would be needed to update firmware? (Is there a FAQ somewhere?)

The upgrade comes as a N64 ROM. So anything that can run that will work. I need to finish the main site and get that up soon.

I didn't think of that! Awesome.
